How to prepare for the Traffic Management Reform program changes

In less than two months, the Traffic Management Reform (TMR) program will make wide-sweeping changes to how people work in traffic control and traffic management. The TMR will be rolled out across the state to promote safety on the road network and reduce unnecessary congestion and delays around worksites. Part of enacting these improvements is updating the way people are trained and qualified to conduct traffic control and management, and these changes are significant.

Let’s have a look at what will change and how you can take advantage of some timely training options to save both time and money.

How will training be different after the 1st of December?

The TMR program has been in the process of gradually being implemented since the start of 2022 – you can find out more about it on our blog here. With the higher standards expected across the board, requirements to achieve qualifications have also become more stringent. This means that training to work in traffic control and management after the 1st of December, 2023, will change in its timeframe and costs.

Timeframe

Currently, workers can undertake a Traffic Control course and a Traffic Management course over two days with COVE Training.

After the 1st of December, completing a Traffic Control course and a Traffic Management course will take approximately six days. In addition, there will be a higher number of modules to complete, and they will need to be completed in a specific order so initial modules will need to be finished before final modules can be done. Furthermore, there is also a practical requirement of 20 hours per skillset on the roads before you can be signed-off for each skillset.

Costs

Currently, workers can undertake a Traffic Control course and a Traffic Management course with COVE Training for $200 each course. Workers who need to refresh their qualifications can do so for $200 for both courses with COVE Training.

After the 1st of December, it will cost upwards of $2000 per person to complete the requirements a Traffic Control course and a Traffic Management course. This change will apply to all Approved Training Providers of the new curriculum after the 1st of December, including COVE.

How can current traffic workers beat the price rise?

We understand that these changes mark a substantial change to training requirements if you work in traffic management and/or control. Registered Training Organisations, such as COVE, are also undergoing much preparation – we are in the process of updating our Traffic Management and Traffic Control courses and will be delivering the updated courses as of the 1st of December, 2023 (subject to accreditation with the Department of Transport and Planning in Victoria).

Between now and then, however, workers have a great option to save big and still be qualified to conduct traffic management.

A refresher course lasts for 3 years, which means that the smart move is to refresh qualifications before the 1st of December deadline to not only save big money and put off a refresher for 3 years, but also do the streamlined current training instead of the extensive new training.

COVE’s Traffic Control Management Refresher course is $200 for both the Traffic Control Refresher and the Traffic Management Refresher. This is a significant saving when you consider that the price will rise to over $2000 after the 1st of December this year.

How can people enter the traffic industry before the price rise?

COVE’s Traffic Management and Traffic Control courses are currently $200 each. Once again, this is a significant saving when you consider that the price to gain qualifications to work in traffic will rise to over $2000 after the 1st of December this year. Your qualifications will remain valid for the next three years if you lock them in now, so it’s a great time to undertake this training.

Train for success with COVE

COVE Training is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and you can rely on our excellent trainers to give you a superior education experience and a qualification that will keep you safe and compliant for three years.

We highly recommend that workers lock in their qualifications for three years at the current price. It’s a great way to make the transition smooth and stress-free or enter the industry in a cost-effective way!
