Always read the operator manual and make sure you get appropriate training before using any plant or equipment, large or small.
Getting the right results also requires a complete understanding of the job at hand. Always refer to your WMS and work instructions to make sure you are producing the right results and doing the job properly.
When you are operating plant and equipment it is important that you do so within the specified tolerances, so you can work towards achieving the desired results.
These tolerances will be determined by the design specifications and will include tolerances for a variety of factors.
The task may require you to operate the small plant or equipment in a particular way. Always make sure that it is within the capability and purpose of the equipment. Refer to the manufacturer’s specifications if you are not sure.
Small plant and equipment operating techniques could include:
- The speed at which you operate (slow, medium, fast).
- The duration the equipment is engaged in the task (1 minute, 25 minutes).
- The force required to carry out the task (use of strength).
- The type and amount of material being moved, cut or manipulated by the equipment.

An employer (PCBU) at a workplace must manage the risks to health and safety associated with operating small plant and equipment, that is reasonably likely to cause injury to the person or any other person. The employer (PCBU) must protect anyone that works with the small plant and equipment.
